Saturday 4/11/2026 at Richmond Elementary 2276 SE 41st Ave, Portland, OR 97214. Tournament will be held in the cafeteria, with skittles in the gymnasium.
Tournament Runs from 9:45am - 4:00pm. Please arrive no later than 9:45am and check-in or you may be given a bye in round 1.
Details
The Rose City Chess April Challengers Tournament is a beginner-friendly chess tournament for players of all ages, with special emphasis on making sure scholastic players have fun. Players are divided into sections based on strength. Each person plays five rounds (four in Section A), regardless of whether they win, lose, or draw their games.
Registration: 100% preregistered by 5:00pm the day before the event. No on-site registration. Click here for preregistration list.
Check-In: 9:30-9:45am. Due to our increased tournament participation, we now require Check-In! Players who fail to check-in will be given a Round 1 Bye, so that everyone on-site has a round 1 opponent.
Entry: $39 Early Bird Entry by March 27th, $49 afterwards
Ratings: USCF rated (USCF memberships required for all participants. Rose City Chess gives free memberships to all scholastic players. Adult players may add USCF membership to their cart by clicking here).
Equipment: Chess sets, clocks, notation sheets, and pencils all provided.
Section B, C, and D Format: Players are grouped in sections according to playing strength. Four roughly equal-sized sections group players by rating. Tournament Director may make slight adjustments to separate siblings, etc. Players play five rounds of G/25;+5 (each player gets 25 minutes of thinking time, plus a 5 second bonus after every move).
Section A Format: Players play four rounds of G/40; +5.
Individual Awards: Medal awards for top 3 in each section, along with all plus/even score finishers!
Team Awards: Trophy awards for Top 3 Co-Ed Middle School and Elementary School Teams.
A team score consists of the top-scoring female player plus the next two highest-scoring players from the same school. Teams must have at least one female player to qualify for the co-ed team award.
Food and Beverage: Rose City Chess is happy to offer a pizza lunch! Select Cheese or Pepperoni Pizza as an add-on for $5 at checkout. Comes with two slices and a drink option (Water or select soft drinks). Orders are only taken in advance - if you are a parent who also wants lunch, please order for all parties ahead of time!
